How To Escape From Self-Fulfilling Prophecies and Limiting Patterns?

Attachments

by Jayaram V

Have you ever wondered what could be the most important cause of all your problems? Why do certain things greatly concern you or bother you while you may not care for other things? Why are you excessively attracted to some objects and people in your life while you may not feel the same towards others? Some people spend their lives defending or working for a cause which to others may look a mere waste of time.

Many people worship wealth and pursue materialistic goals as if having status and recognition in society is more important than anything else. In contrast you may come across people who go to the most difficult and dangerous places in the world to work for the poor and the helpless. What motivates an ascetic person go the Himalayas or a village boy become an industrial tycoon? Why do people become caught in repetitive patterns of behavior and habitual thinking, which seem to shape their lives and destinies and from which they may find it difficult to escape?

Thousands of years ago the philosophers and spiritual masters of India suggested that human behavior was motivated by attachments. By attachment we mean any strong attraction or aversion that you may feel towards particular things. It is an invisible, physical or mental bond (bandha or pasa) between you and the object of your attachment, also known as clinging, which influences your thinking, behavior and actions. Whether you have emotional issues, problems in your profession, or difficulties in your relationships, you can trace them all to your attachments. They determine the general direction of your life, and how you perceive the world and relate to it. Each person is caught in a web of such attachments and live their lives according to their dictates.

Your attachments grow with you. In the early days of your life you may have fewer attachments, like attachment to comfort, your parents, mother’s breast, milk, or food, and pleasant sounds, but as you grow they multiply in proportion to the experiences you go through and the objects that you deal with. You may be aware of some of them, but many remain hidden and unknown but influence your thinking and actions, which manifest in your life as habits, relationships, likes and dislikes, daily routines, rigid behavior, belief system, and cultural or religious preferences.

Many social problems of today such as regionalism, racism, religious fanaticism, and nationalism can be traced to the attachments people form to their group identities or collective ego. Some attachments that are positive are conducive to self-growth. For example, attachment to religious duty, virtue, spiritual practices, truth, excellence and the like inculcates righteous conduct and helps individuals to grow spiritually. On the contrary, attachment to sexual pleasure, material comforts, power, wealth, status, and the like results in materialism, vice, aggression, violence, selfishness, egoism, and vanity. For a person seeking liberation (moksha or nirvana), all attachments are harmful because they lead to karma, bondage, and suffering

Attachments drive you towards your goals or keep you safe from those that you want to avoid. However, as you are caught between the duality of attraction and aversion to things, your attachments also limit your freedom to be yourself or live your life according to your will and full potential. Whether you are rich or poor, and whether you lead a disciplined life or not, your attachments are the prime driving forces in your life. What you do and experience in your life are largely in their hands. Some of the attachments are so deeply hidden and natural to your behavior that you may not even know that you are manifesting your destiny and self-fulfilling prophecies under their influence, while you may be conveniently blaming others for your problems and shortcomings.

Your attachments are real. To know them, you do not have to believe in religion, karma, or rebirth. With some effort and analysis you can see their play in your life and how they limit your ability to live freely or act spontaneously according to the situation rather than according to your fears, desires, or expectations. Your attachments are responsible for many afflictions and emotions of your mind. They not only limit your choices but also influence your attitude and expectations, and thereby prevent you from taking risks or being objective and effective.

Because of them you may also feel vulnerable to certain situations, emotions, people, and relationships and fail to act effectively. They create in your mind many emotional states, habits, daily routines, beliefs, habitual thoughts, attitudes, preferences, prejudices and expectations towards specific ideas, concepts, ideologies, tasks, tastes, people, names and forms, values, and belief systems, which may potentially excite you, disturb you, upset you, or emotionally make you vulnerable to certain objects, events and situations.

For example, if anyone makes a negative remark about you, it may disturb you for long, and the feeling may persist even if you try to forget it. In some cases it may lead to restlessness, loss of sleep, worry, or anxiety. If you carefully examine, you will realize that it happens mostly because that remark touched something that you deeply value. It may be your attachment to the notion of who you are, your ability, esteem, or why others should appreciate you or respect you. It may be because of your attachment to a past memory or an old belief.

Every habit that you cultivate is the result of one or more attachments only. Your love or dislike for a nation, norm, ideology, political system, religion, or value also arises from your attraction or aversion the things in your life. Once you develop them and harbor them in your mind, they control your life and destiny. As time goes by, they gain strength and leave strong impressions in your mind, which over a lifetime morph into latent impressions (samskaras). According to our scriptures you next life is shaped by the latent impressions that you carry with you into your next life.

It is therefore necessary to become aware of your attachments and deal with them. If you are having emotional problems, or if you are stuck in daily routine and unable to make progress in your life, you must pay attention to your attachments and reduce their influence. For example, you might have noticed that success and mobility are interrelated. Successful people tend to be adventurous and are not afraid to move from one job to another, one place to another, or migrate to another country. They are successful because their mobility gives them an opportunity to break free from their attachments, daily routines and mental habits as they adapt to the new challenges and the new environment. They may not be able to overcome all their attachments, but at least they are more flexible in their choices and preferences.

The root cause of your attachments is the desire for something or the other. If you want to get rid of your attachments you must examine your desires and how they are influencing you by creating in you attraction and aversion towards certain objects. Once you identify the objects that are responsible for your attachments and the feelings and sensations they generate, you can work on them to reduce their influence. You can also cultivate detachment as an antidote to overcome your attachment or cultivate a strong will.

Therefore, pay attention to your attachments and how they shape your life. By understanding them, you can free yourself from the limiting factors of your life and extend your personal space as well as freedom. You can learn to be independent, objective, open, focused, flexible, creative, and spontaneous, free from habitual thought patterns, irrational beliefs, prejudices, hidden agendas, negative emotions, and strong likes and dislikes. You can improve your effectiveness and efficiency by freeing yourself from the fears and concerns that prevent you from exercising your will or pursuing your goals. You can become unstuck by freeing yourself from whatever that has been holding you back and preventing you to be yourself or use your full potential and creativity, and get on with your life.

Finally, remember that anything that worries your or upsets you is because of your attachments. If you want to stay in control and be free from them, you must weaken their hold upon you.

Rosicrucian Reflections #80

“In the illustrious Rosicrucian school, there is no master and pupil. There are just men and women who share the same ideal, and who have made the decision to open the door and move forward. Do we not say that there is strength in unity? By virtue of your own journey, you can describe yourself as a mystic, because a mystical person is someone who lives in harmony with her or his objective consciousness, intuition, and feelings. Being a mystic does not mean being perfect: in the first instance, it simply means being aware of what would need to be done, in order to become so.”

Essene Meditations And Blessings #82

Meditation

I live now

At the apex of the solar year,

Drenched in warmth

And outer power.

I bathe

In the cleansing water of my Mother,

Naked and unashamed.

I need no garment

To separate me

From the waters of the Spirit,

For my flesh and spirit are united,

And wholeness flows through me.

The Blessing

In this time of outward activity,

Of creation on the physical plane,

I ask to remember

That the wheel is ever-turning,

And I am propelled

Toward my inner nature

Even as I celebrate

My outer nature.

For in the fullness of light

Rest the seeds of night,

and in the darkness

The seeds of day.

Science Of Mind #52

I Let My Light Shine

People who spend a great deal of time in prayer, meditation , or communion with the Spirit gradually take on a new atmosphere, a new sweetness, a love and light that all others sense. The Old Testament often refers to a light always shining over the alter in the temple. This light, of course, is a symbol of the Life that is never extinguished. The light of Jesus has been sensed by artists so completely that they have depicted it as an aura, an atmosphere of light.

Now this light is real. There is such a light at the center of everything. This is the Divine Stuff of which we are all made. There is nothing outside this light. Everything exists in it. There is light at the center ,of everyone. It is never obliterated, but it does seem that it is often obscured for various reasons. Jesus said never to put your light under a bushel, but to let it shine.

I feel a deep sense of unity with everyone and with everything. I know that all is Love and I am filled with the goodness of Life. Love and Light flow in and through me. I give thanks for the radiance of Spirit within me.

Are You Willing To Be Yourself?

Authentic Personality

by Jayaram V

The world follows those who do not follow the world. Jayaram V

In the Autobiography of a Yogi, Swami Paramahansa Yogananda narrated his meeting with Rabindranath Tagore, the famous Bengali Poet of the last century, and how he admired his poetry and other works. While writing about his meeting with him, he stated that in his earlier days before receiving the Noble Prize for literature Rabindranath Tagore had many critics, who used to criticize him for his style and “mixing colloquial expressions with classical,” setting aside the norms that were dear to the scholars. He mentioned that a well-known critic of his times even went to the extent of describing him as a “pigeon poet who sold his cooings in print for a rupee.”

The trend changed after Rabindranath Tagore won the Noble Prize for literature, and got a lot of recognition and attention for his literary skills in the West and all over the world. People at home realized his true merit and began praising him. Some of them who criticized him before also changed their minds and became his admirers and flatterers. The Swami narrated that after he won the prize, a delegation of scholars went to meet him at Santiniketan, where he was staying. Tagore said to have met them after making them wait for a long time and chastised them in his poetic style for their attitude stating that their fragrant honors were mixed with the “putrid odors” of past contempt, but he was still the same poet who offered his “humble flowers at the shrine of Bengal.”

Rabindranath Tagore was not the only person to go though such an experience. It is common to many people who achieve success after initial struggle. It is no wonder that many famous people posthumously achieved their fame and recognition after living a life of great hardship and suffering. Saints like Shirdi Baba, Swami Vivekananda, Maheshyogi, Acharya Rajneesh, and many writers, artists, film stars and national leaders had their ample share of struggle before they were accepted and appreciated by the public. The same happens to many people who try to initiate new movements or push new ideas into the public.

Their experience reveals an important aspect of human nature, which usually remains hidden from public view but can be noticed with some effort. It is well evident even today in public life, on the Internet, in the media, and on many social networks. People seek celebrities and famous politicians only after they become popular, and after they gain a large following. The people they admire might have had a difficult time and spurned by many before they became popular. It is as if more money gets more money, more popularity begets more popularity, and vice versa. Familiarity may breed contempt, but it also brings acceptance.

Why is it so? Why do people not appreciate genuine talent or support good leaders, products and ideas purely based on their merit, instead of their popularity? One of the important reasons is that people tend to follow popular opinion rather than their own because they either do not have time to think or cannot trust their own thinking and reasoning. Many seek approval and appreciation from others to feel good about themselves or their decisions, or follow popular opinion or authority symbols to reassure themselves that they are on the right side of things. It is comforting for many to look for approval and the opinion of others to validate their own decisions, opinions, choices, and judgments.https://googleads.

When they see that a person or an idea is acceptable to a large number of people in society, they automatically assume that the choice is good enough to accept. Therefore, they find no difficulty in joining the crowd to appreciate things. This is the herd mentality, or the group think, with which many are familiar. When you are in a crowd ,you tend to be carried away by the emotions of the crowd and more likely you try to fit in rather than standout. Unless you are very independent minded and value your individuality, you will follow the trodden paths and tested methods rather than choosing your own.

Celebrate your ife on your terms

It is important to be a social person and to live in harmony with others. However, it is equally important to honor your individuality and self-worth. To be an authentic person you must be in touch with your true feelings and trust your own discernment, rather than becoming a blind follower of other people’s opinions. You must have a mind of your own and be yourself. Otherwise what is the point of living a life that you cannot own or claim as yours? What is the point of living your life in the mental image of another person?

The best way to celebrate your life is to be yourself, even if you do not find in you what you may find in those whom you hold in great esteem. You must be the measure of your own esteem and self-worth, and you must be courageous and honest enough to accept yourself with all your faults and perfections. You have only one genuine guardian to guard your life and your persona against the world, and that is you. You cannot suppress that person in the hope of gaining approval from others.

Own your identity and individuality

You can be an authentic person, when you do not suppress your inner voice and your true feelings about things and people, and when you do not color your perceptions and experiences with false narratives. You do not have to express your true opinions, if they are going to hurt others, but you must be aware of them and acknowledge them. You must know when you are hurt, when you are angry, when you are afraid, and how you relate to others in your own inner world. That inner world of yours is more important and precious than anything else in the world, because it is your only sanctuary. Otherwise, where else you can hide when you are hurt by the world or troubled by circumstances?

See how far you have gone away from yourself and alienated yourself from yourself. How much you dislike for being yourself, what you are, or what you do. See whether you have developed a public image to make peace with the world and fit in, which you have accepted as your true self-image. Unless you know who you truly are, you will never able to know the difference. You may make compromises with the world, or you may fit in with a crowd for any reason, but you should know that you are doing it for a reason and it is different from what you truly feel inside.

Feelings are the doorways to your authentic personality, which you may often cover up in a maze of cleverly crafted words and delusional justifications. If you want to be your true self, you should not be afraid to be yourself or accept your true feelings. In the heart of your heart you must know who you are and what you truly stand for. Only then you will be able to discern the world for what it is and remain mentally free from self-deception and rationalization. Without it, all your search for spirituality, self-realization, mental peace, inner harmony, balance, stability, yoga practice, meditation, friendship, and even marriage, become superfluous and part of a manipulate and self-deceptive drama. Therefore, first surrender to your true identity and embrace it, before you surrender to God, divinity, or a guru.

Spiritual Teachings #3 Christianity

From Mystic Treatises by Saint Isaac of Nineveh

Faith is the gate to the mysteries. What the bodily eye is for the things of the senses, the same is faith in connection with the treasures hidden to the eyes of the mind.

We possess two psychic eyes, as the Fathers say, just as we possess two bodily eyes. But both have not the same purpose as to sight.

With one we see the hidden glory of God which is concealed in the things of nature, His power and His wisdom, and His eternal care for us which by His particular providence is directed unto us. With the same eye we also see the spiritual classes of our fellow-beings. With the other we see the glory of His holy nature. When our Lord desires to give us initiation to the spiritual mysteries, He opens in our mind the ocean of faith.

As a grace beyond a grace has repentance been given to man. Repentance is being born anew in God. That of which we have received the pledge by baptism, we receive as a gift by repentance. Repentance is the gate of mercy, which is opened to all who seek it. Through this gate we go in to Divine Mercy. Apart from this entrance it is not possible to find mercy. Because all have sinned, according to the words of Scripture, and are justified freely by grace. (Rom. 3, 23) Repentance is a second grace; it is born in the heart from faith and fear. Fear* is the paternal rod which guides us up to the spiritual Eden. When we have arrived there, it leaves us and returns. Eden is the divine love wherein is the paradise of all goods, where the blessed Paul was sustained by supernatural food. When he had eaten from the tree of life which is there, he exclaimed: “eye has not seen nor ear heard neither have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for them that love Him.” (I Cor. 2, 9) Adam was bereft of this tree by the promise of the Devil. The tree of life is the divine love which Adam lost by his fall, after which he worked and wearied himself. Those who are bereft of divine love are still eating the bread that is won by the sweat of their labour, even though they work righteousness, as was commanded to the head of our race when he lost it by his fall. Until we find love, we work in the earth with her thorns. Among thorns we sow and reap, even if we sow the seed of righteousness. Perpetually we are pricked by them, even if we are justified, and live with sweat on our faces.

When, however, we have found love, we eat the heavenly bread and we are sustained without labour and without weariness. Love is sufficient to feed man instead of food and drink. This is the wine that gladdens the heart of man. Blessed is he who has drunk from this wine.

As it is not possible to cross the ocean without a boat or a ship, so no one can cross towards love, without fear. This foetid sea, which lies between us and the intelligible paradise, we cross in the boat of repentance, which has fear for a rudder. If the rudder of fear does not govern this ship of repentance, in which we cross the sea of this world towards God, we shall be drowned in the foetid sea. Repentance is the ship, fear is the governor, love is the divine port.

When we have reached love, we have reached God and our way is ended and we have passed unto the island which lieth beyond the world, where is the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit; to whom be glory and dominion. That He make us worthy to fear and to love him. Amen.

Rosicrucian Reflections #79

“As mystics throughout time have found, the road to discovery, to peace and enlightenment is a journey into Self. There is more to our conscious being than we realize and it is from within that we find the keys that unlock our inner wisdom. It is from within that we can connect with the source of knowledge that lies beyond the limits of our five senses.”

Meditation

Solar light,

Ancient source of power and life,

It is you who guides my path this day.

‘Tis the season of your ruling,

And I, like you,

Must use this moment fully

To urge the world to grow.

And grow it will,

And grow I will

To the fullness of my potential,

For that is who I AM.

The Blessing

Does not the apple tree

Share its fruit with all,

Not choosing who is blessed?

As my vessel

Overflows with love,

Do I not share this love with all?

For in our oneness

There exist no chosen ones.

Only fellow travelers do I see

On the path

Back home to God.
